Self Care After an EMDR session

After a desensitization session it is not uncommon to feel a bit sleepy or fatigue. Just because the 60-90 min session with the therapist may be over however the brain doesn’t stop processing and helping to resolve traumatic material. You may notice vivid dreams, along with different memories and emotions arise. After each desensitization session water, protein and rest is recommended.

Water is very grounding and signals the parasympathetic nervous system to trigger digestion. The parasympathetic nervous system is the part of the nervous system that relaxes muscles and increases digestive juices- rest and digest. Thusly, it signals that the body is safe enough and is not under threat or alarm allowing for grounding and calming.

Protein helps restore the cells as the body will have undergone a mini ‘workout’.  We use a protein after a physical workout to support a healthy metabolism and restore cell recovery. It can also help in restoration and processing after brain activity.  No you are not running a marathon or actually working out but the brain is working to reprocess traumatic or negatively stored memories.

Finally, the client needs to time to rest and only do what’s needed for the remainder of the day. It may feel like a nap is needed. Take it. If you are more emotional or more sensitive than usual try doing an activity where you feel nurtured and can support your healing work.
